“The Problem with Spreadsheets”

With spreadsheets, work is performed at the cell level. Formulas can only be duplicated by copying, and as the model becomes more complex, spreadsheets can become burdensome and inaccurate.


In Whitebirch, self-contained groups of line items (financial objects) are created just once, and then used repeatedly. Changing the object in one place reproduces it throughout the model. No copying. No pasting. No endless checking to make sure all the formulas are correctly updated.

Project Finance

Modeling for project finance is significantly different than typical planning exercises. The focus is on long-term financing of infrastructure, industrial projects and public services based upon project cash flows, rather than the balance sheet of its sponsors. Financial modeling for projects is critical, not only for planning purposes but also for structuring a deal.

  • • Managing Cash Flows: One of the more challenging aspects of project finance is managing cash flow, which Whitebirch handles with ease. A preferred return on investors’ initial financing may be required, and must be accumulated on the balance sheet. As cash becomes available, it must be distributed to the parties in order of preference, commonly referred to as a cash waterfall.
  • • Modeling Cash Waterfalls: Cash Waterfalls are easily modeled in Whitebirch. The platform includes a reference to "available cash", which is the amount of cash available prior to the current operation. As each payment is made, the available cash is passed to the next highest priority, which is paid with available funds. Model Integrity: Objects versus Spreadsheet Cells

Whitebirch’s object-based modeling design eliminates the time-consuming process of assembling model components, and verifying complex formulas and references.


Each object contains built-in logic to generate all the financial statement line items, ensuring the integrity of the model and the accuracy of all calculations. The objects integrate seamlessly with one another.


A library of financial objects includes revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities and equity, to speed the model building process. Users simply specify the parameters and let the software do the rest. It's highly customizable ­ providing standard formulas or the ability override with custom ones.


Based on your requirements, create as many objects as you need, shift them in time, and organize them in any level of detail, all without broken links or formula errors. You can also create interdependencies between objects using formulas, including conditional expressions.

  • • Design the model to your specifications. Objects can be organized into any number of nested groups. Use them for product lines, distribution channels, business units, departments, or divisions.
  • • Know your projections are correct. Built-in business and accounting rules assure the integrity of the model and the accuracy of all projections.
  • • Select and vary parameters. Object parameters can be treated as a constant (with the same value for all time) or can vary by time period. Users can give them different values in each scenario. They can also be calculated as a formula that is a function of one or more parameters of any number of financial objects. Complex expressions using conditional logic can also be employed.
  • • Use built-in formulas or override. Some objects, such as loans or assets, have built-in formulas for calculations such as loan payments or asset depreciation. The user has the option to override the built-in formulas.

Plan versus Actual Reporting

Whitebirch allows you to easily compare and contrast views of financial data. Use historical data as a basis for the plan, and then replace projections with actual data as time moves forward.
